Uniclass 2015 - Resources

At the weekend one or two people on Twitter asked if I could post some of the NBS videos demonstrating how to use Uniclass 2015 so they can use them when explaining classification to others.

So, here are some links to resources that some may find useful.

If you do download them and use them - then please credit NBS (theNBS.com/Uniclass) for use of the content and put a tweet out to help spread the word :)

Short video files showing the concepts:
These have been exported to WMV format so they should work fine when embedded in a Powerpoint. Download below:
- Google Drive Folder containing videos

Explainer article:
In addition to these videos, there is also a good 'What is Uniclass' explainer article from NBS Head of Classification Sarah Delany:

Mark Bew - BIM Level 2 and BIM Level 3

It was fantastic last week to have Mark Bew delivering our first lecture in our new NBS building.
thenbs.com/knowledge/four-things-mark-bew-told-us-about-the-future-of-bim-and-digital-construction

I've known Mark since the days when he was chair of UK buildingSMART and hosting buildingSMART meetings in the Scott Wilson offices in London. Since then Mark went on to persuade the UK Government that it would be a good idea to 'do BIM' - and then was the driving force behind the BIM level-2 initiative.

Only 50 people could fit in the room. So - a few slides from the presentation below and also the embedded video of the presentation from our NBS youtube channel.

I'd definitely recommend finding 30-40 minutes one lunchtime and watching the video at the end of this blog post...
The first lecture in our new building

Paul Morrell's reflection on the UK achievements

A reflection on where technology was when Mark started out on his career

The exponential growth of computing power

Using the cloud, and apps, and feedback to create a better society based on evidence of performance
Watch the presentation now...

An introduction to NBS BIM Toolkit - Video

As part of the development of our new website we wanted to produce a set of videos that introduce some of the NBS offerings in three minutes.

The first of these was the BIM Workflow video we released in March.

The second of these was the introduction to NBS Create we released in April.

A few weeks ago in May we released our third video. This one tells the story of the BIM Toolkit highlighting the key benefits of this tool to owner/operators, the design/construction team and also construction manufacturers.

Please watch it below - Some commentary to the story is also provided below the video in this blog post.

The story behind the video again is from the point of view of the current refurbishment work that is taking place on our building in Newcastle (project led by JDDK architects).

The key objectives of BIM Level-2
The standards and tools that define BIM Level 2
Helping clients define who is doing what and when to meet their information requirements
Define information requirements and responsibilities and export to help create EIRs and BEPs
A tool for project teams to collaborate online when producing information in response to the EIR/BEP
A huge library of free-to-use classifications and LOD/LOI guidance illustrations across all sectors
Quickly reference these LOD/LOI items from an online digital plan of work
Helping manufacturers on their BIM Level-2 journey and placing their products in front of the decision makers on major projects
Populate your product data sheets using templates as a 'step one' on a BIM journey
Support in placing this well structured data into parametric 3D objects that will be used by the largest of architectural and engineering practices
Find out more on all of the technical concepts at toolkit.thenbs.com/articles
A big thank you once again to our video partner Soluis - top video again - big thanks in particular to Laura for her work over the last few months.

To explore and start using BIM Toolkit please visit https://toolkit.thenbs.com

Please keep an eye out on this blog and theNBS.com for some pretty nice BIM Toolkit enhancements coming soon too! They've been pretty well received during recent customer visits - so looking forward to them going live.

An introduction to NBS Create - Video

As part of the development of our new website we wanted to produce a video that introduces the NBS Create specification system in three minutes. This comes hot on the heels of the NBS BIM workflow video I blogged about in March.

This video may now be viewed below:
- theNBS.com/Create

As with the previous BIM video, again this video introduces the product through telling the story of our own building project and uses NBS colleagues within the movie.
At NBS, our technical authors work together to ensure the quality and structure of the NBS content
This content is then used by thousands of constructional professionals on thousands of projects across the UK
The structure of this content allows for innovative functionality where specifications can be developed from outline to full throughout the project timeline - functionality also connects the specification to relevant standards and manufacturers
The video moves through our new office building looking at specifications from the different disciplines
Where each member of the project team subscribes, the final documentation is consistent across all disciplines
Project teams can strengthen the NBS Create system by capturing their office knowledge within it
The specification must be coordinated with the drawings and schedules - the connectivity within a BIM environment give big efficiency benefits here
...and the video ends as it started with a focus on the NBS people - in this case the support that is provided to customers as part of their subscription
To find out more about NBS Create - please see:
- theNBS.com/Create

Thanks to chartered architects JDDK who have led the building project and are pictured in the video

Thanks also (again) to Soluis who partnered with us to produce the video.

How NBS fits into your BIM workflow - Video

As part of the launch of our new brand and our new website - we now have a dedicated place on our website explaining how NBS products and services can support you within your BIM workflow.

As part of this, we have just produced a three minute video as a short introduction.

What I think is particularly nice about this video is that the story is told from our own building project that is currently under way. This is a genuine model of our building. The content and software examples are genuine. Some stills from the video are explained below.
At an early stage, client information requirements can be defined in the NBS BIM Toolkit
Generic objects from the National BIM Library can help generate concept designs
Specifications can be started early and then developed through the timeline using NBS Create
Relevant standards and regulations are linked to BIM objects and specifications within the Construction Information Service
Product specifications from over 650 manufacturers may be added using NBS Plus
The NBS Plug-in for Autodesk Revit synchronises the model and the specification
Information is developed through the project timeline
The connectivity between the solutions is what makes them so effective
To find out more about our BIM solutions - please see:

Thanks to chartered architects JDDK who have led the building project

Thanks also (again) to Soluis who partnered with us to produce our third engaging BIM video (previous 1, previous 2).
