BIM Show Live 2018 - Review

Top marks to the BIM Show Live team and the delegates for putting on a fantastic show this week despite of the worst snow in Newcastle for the last decade.

A review and some useful links from some of the sessions below...

1. Dave Philp, Digital Built Britain
As always with BIM Show Live, Dave Philp opened the show. He arrived on stage with an electric guitar player playing 'I would walk 500 miles', which was fitting considering the weather conditions and the public transport options to get to the conference!

Dave gave an update from Digital Built Britain. He promoted the success of the standards, the difference this was making at home and the recognition this was getting overseas.

There was a mention of ISO 19650 parts 1 and 2 which are now well progressed and looked at the influence the PAS 1192 standards have had over these.

Looking to the future, the Government want to create a 'National Digital Twin' of the countries physical infrastructure. But let's get the foundations right.

2. Rob Charlton, Space Group
Rob gave the state of the nation address. He reflected on previous years where he looked at which disciplines were adopting BIM and which were not. Rob now believes everyone is committed. He then looked at some examples that he sees through his BIM Technologies business. The big private sector clients, the big tier one contractors and the university estates and building teams - all now fully committed to a digital future.

Is everyone perfectly adopting the PAS 1192 standards? Maybe not, but it's not similar to ISO 9001. Where we may not be perfect. But the majority are now 'there or thereabouts'.

AI, Blockchain, VR and AR were identified as emerging technologies. But then there was a reflection on Carillion going out of business and the disaster that was Grenfell. Why is the construction industry on the front page of the newspapers for the wrong reason.

How can we check that what is specified is specified correctly and then is followed through on site? There used to be a clerk of works working for the client that gave reassurance on quality. Can we use new technology to provide a 'digital clerk of works' checking that the products specified are installed and the quality levels specified are followed?

Personally speaking, this message is one that the data providers and software companies can help with. Provide standardised data structures, provide technology that helps coordinate this and provide technologies that help provide transparency of decision making.

3. Anders Hvid, Dare Disrupt
Anders looked at how digital technologies have changed and are changing the world.

He started by looking at the improvements in robotics in recent years.

One nice case study from the agricultural industry is how John Deere use data to get big advantages in farming. Combining data around feritiliser, the land, the weather and then combining that across common data from around the country to give efficiencies for all...

When looking at the difference between small improvements vs revolutionary disruptions he gave two examples:
- Kodak improved by taking their film capacity from 24 to 36 to 44 photographs. With digital you can now get 100,000 photographs on a 128MB memory card for £20.
- Opening a bookshops costs roughly the same every time you open a shop. Selling books digitally costs are very similar whether you sell 100 books or 1,000,000.

When Apple released their phone. It didn't do converstions as well as Nokia - poorer quality audio and a rubbish batter life. But users accept a little pain to get future gain. The lesson being that you may have to go through a little pain at first before seeing big enhancements.

4. Sarah Rock and May Winfield, UK BIM Alliance
Sarah and May presented their BIM+Legal report.

One of the headline recommendations is saying 'This is going to be a BIM project' or 'This is going to be a BIM Level 2 project' isn't enough. As part of the contract documentation a set of Employer's Information Requirements and responding BIM Execution Plan is what sets the rules of (a) what is expected and then (b) what is agreed at the start of the project.

The BIM Level 2 standards give the framework, but on a specific project the rules must be agreed within this framework.

5. Paul Swaddle, NBS
My colleague Paul Swaddle did a session on cyber security and it was fascinating with lots and lots of good links. A selection of these are below that are definitely worth reading:

6. My session
My session at 4pm on day two was slightly late in the day considering that red and orange weather warnings across the country telling people to get home :)

Next week, Wednesday 28th February and Thursday 1st March it is BIM Show Live 2018.

BIM Show Live 2017

Last week it was fantastic to see over 400 construction professionals in Newcastle for BIM Show Live.  A collection of photographs and videos below from the event...

Don't miss out on BIM Show Live 2017

BIM Show Live 2017 is fast approaching (1st and 2nd Feb) and it looks like it's going to better than ever.

Since BIM Show Live #2 NBS have always played a part in the UK's biggest and best BIM event and this year it will be no different. It's a little bit more special this year of course as the event is only a few hundred meters from our offices in Newcastle upon Tyne!

NBS will be doing technology demonstrations, contributing to panel discussions and running one of the classes. So if you want to catch up with us and know anything more about our products and services, we'll be on hand over the two days.

BIM Toolkit launched at BIM Show Live

The BIM Show Live launch presentation saw Dave Philp from the UK Government's BIM Task Group look at their journey since 2011 and reflect on progress and achievements. I then gave an overview of how the Toolkit fits into the level-2 workflow. Finally, Prof Steve Lockley, looked at the verification functionality.

Over the two days, the NBS exhibition stand always had plenty of interest. The main buzz was about the Toolkit, but many also wanting to see how NBS Create and NBS National BIM Library could help those working on BIM projects.

Although it was busy at BIM Show Live - it was nothing compared to what it was like back at NBS HQ in Newcastle with the team working around the clock for the two days leading up to launch ensuring the beta website was as robust as possible and the deployment onto the live servers was stable. An enormous 'thank-you' must go out to the project team for all of their fantastic work - both within NBS and also to the wider team.

So what about the concepts behind the Toolkit?

As part of the website, there is a Technical Support section that has a number of articles looking into the concepts behind this. A few screen-grabs from these articles are below:

1. Rob Manning - Level-2 BIM
Rob led this project from a UK Government's BIM Task Group point of view. This article explains what level-2 BIM is. Supporting comment are also provided from Mark Bew (BIM Task Group Head) and Rick Holland (Innovate UK).

2. Richard Watson - Employer's Information Requirements
Richard is the exec director who was the Project Sponsor for BIM Toolkit - an architect and also Chief Informaton Officer for RIBA Enterprises. This article looks at the subject of EIRs and how the toolkit can support client needs. Supporting comments are also provided from Terry Stocks (MofJ) and Peter Barker (BIM consultant)

Alistair, Director of Information, at BDP and Stefan Mordue architect and NBS Business Consultant look at the subject of levels of definition. NBS has released hundreds of sets of LOD reference guides and thousands of LOI templates as part of the BIM Toolkit.

4. Sarah Delany - Classification
Sarah was the the secretary of CPIC for many years. An engineer and technical author at NBS, she led the classification work over the project. What is the difference between an entity, an element, a system and a product? Find out here...

BIM Show Live 2014 - Review

There was a strong NBS presence at the fourth annual BIM Show Live 2014. This year the location was Manchester as the UK’s largest BIM event moved up from London.

The traditional opening addresses were from BIM Show Live founder Rob Charlton and UK Government’s BIM Task Group’s David Philp. Both commented on how far the industry had moved in three years and spoke with optimism about the future of digital information, processes and technology.

The keynote speaker this year was Marc Priestley who worked as a senior member of the pit stop crew for McLaren for 10 years. The presentation gave a great insight into technology and process change in Formula One and some very interesting parallels with the construction industry were made.

1. The need to adopt for change
The biggest change in Formula One in the last twenty years was the banning of tobacco sponsorship. Practically overnight, the most significant funding stream was removed from the sport. Some teams did not survive. Other teams worked extremely hard to replace this ‘easy’ funding stream and adapted to the change. The slide below shows Lewis Hamilton celebrating showing off every single sponsor’s logo with his top zipped fully up (and sporting a watch that he quickly put on after the race). The Marlboro logo was replaced by Vodafone.

2. How to analyse your processes and improve them
Ten years a pit stop took just over 4 seconds. Now it takes just over 2 seconds. A video was shown where McLaren’s 2 second pit-stop allowed Jenson Button to beat Sebastian Vettel who only managed a 3 second pit-stop. This was only achieved through improved technology and a microscopic analysis of the process.

3. How cutting edge technology becomes the norm
Formula One is the pinnacle of motor racing. However, the latest technology in the sport eventually works its way down to family cars. Recent examples have been anti-lock brakes and hybrid electric/petrol engines. A parallel will be seen in the construction industry here as top quality visualisations, 3d printing, scanning, reusable object libraries and other cutting edge developments will soon be affordable and in the hands of all in the construction industry.
What are the parallels between Formula One and BIM?
The first NBS involvement of the day was at the lunchtime session where the 2014 National BIM Report findings were revealed.

Ian also was one of the speakers at the session ‘what manufacturers need to know about BIM’.
Pragmatic advice was given on creating objects that satisfy the needs of BIM users and adhere to the latest standards. Advice was also delivered on what level of detail should be put in objects and how much information should be included and what information should be linked to. All good advice for a room full of construction product manufacturers.

How construction manufacturers can support designers and contractors in helping the industry meet its targets
I was also fortunate enough to have a class accepted and gave a live software demonstration of the NBS BIM ecosystem. It is always fun to do a live software demonstration as opposed to going through pre-prepared Powerpoint slides. The atmosphere of a ‘Tech Stage’ is always good too as you attract more people from the break out area as the presentation develops. As time was reasonably short I tried to keep the demonstration to three main themes:
  1. How to coordinate modelled information with specification information using plug-in technology for system, component, material and 2D objects.
  2. How specification information can be referenced and viewed from the linked objects in the model.
  3. How NBS are giving functionality that they use internally on National BIM Library away for free to users that create their own objects and want to stamp standard NBS and office master properties into their own objects.

BIM Show Live 2013

BIM Show Live 2013 has just ended. It goes from strength-to-strength - and with 600+ delegates this year it probably has now crept into the lead as the UK's biggest BIM event.

Looking back on the two days, I maybe didn't get the chance to see as many classes as I'd have liked - too much time spent demonstrating our BIM content and software at our stand (which I love doing). So this blog post isn't particularly content heavy - but a few pictures below to give a taster of what it was like.

1. The event
The event was held at the fantastic venue the Park Plaza on the opposite side of The Thames to Big Ben. As gold sponsors, we had a great NBS stand in the main communal area from which we demonstrated NBS Create and National BIM Library.

The event itself opened in style - lights, music and David Philp Cabinet Office/Mace Group giving an inspirational speech. Rob Charlton CEO of Space Group then welcomed the delegates and gave a "state of the industry address". One slide in particular was put out there to provoke discussion. What professions are leading the way and what professions are lagging behind when it comes to BIM adoption? From what I remember the slide showed:
  • In denial - Quantity Surveyors
  • Resistance - FM, M+E, Manufacturers
  • Exploration - Main contractors, Architects, Sub contractors
  • Commitment - Clients, Structural Engineers
Obviously there will be exceptions within each profession up and down the curve. But if anyone has any views based on their experience - please add comments to this post.

It was also really good to see the "Class of your own" BIM kids demonstrate their secondary school construction projects looking at BIM. Great that the next generation got this showcase platform and maybe a little push for the current generation to adapt.

Back in the Exhibition Hall it was good to catch up with Soluis and see how they continue to progress our NBS Lakeside model in their interactive environment. And back at the NBS stand, BIM 2050 member and Technical Author Stefan Mordue had the media interest - talking about BIM innovation and future gazing.

The next Kevin McCloud
One thing that was really nice to see was really intelligent debate around IFC and Open BIM. No extreme drum banging on either side of the argument - just great sensible analysis. I managed to catch a good portion of the Metz Architects, the Rob Jackson/Nigel Davies and the Adam Ward classes. The Metz/BIM Academy work on using IFC to transfer parametric objects was fascinating (and something NBS are involved in with Prof Lockley). The #LockleyIFCChallenge "B I M !" model was demonstrated. Can this be used for IFC certification? Maybe ten points for each geometry type, points for property sets, points for colour display? This would give a #LockleyIFCChallenge score out of 100 for each geometric BIM tool starting next year?

Rob and Nigel's session looked at real life project BIM and the challenges and successes of transferring data "warts and all" using IFC. Finally, Adam looked at a real life project BIM and how as BIM technology specialists they have taken data through to a SQL FM database using bespoke software and exports.

My favourite quote from all of this was Rob Jackson, "It's nice to be able to talk about IFC without people throwing things at me" :) How things have changed in just 12 months.

Oh, and I also did my Technology Hall live demo showing IFC from a geometric model being augmented with key performance data from the NBS Create spec. Maybe this is one for another (video) blog post.

3. Retro Technology
There has been a lot of twitter chat from the #VeteranBIMCrew about the olden days. Nice to see some old  computers and game consoles on display. Even though the BBC B was not plugged in - I sat by it and typed into the (not switched on) keyboard and re-lived the old days of 10 PRINT "STEPHEN" and 20 GOTO 10. Also the feel of the keys under the fingers of Z and X and ? and @ for left, right, down and up as if I was on Mr Doo or Sabre Wolf brought a smile to the face.

...and squashed into all of this there was *still* time for some banter and a beer or two. One or two people commented on how good the camaraderie is in the BIM community even though many organisations are competing hard...

...and a final thought. 40 years on... are we getting closer to achieving the following? (this is the inlay from the very first 1973 NBS). Maybe we are but now using well-structured data and intelligent software?
